| What
is Lime Mortar ? |
Mortar
is quite a general term for the material used to build (lay bricks
or stone), point, re-point.
Lime
Mortar is Mortar with no cement, Lime putty is used along with various
aggregates such as sand, or crushed limestone. |

is Lime Putty ? |
Lime
Putty is a putty or paste that is created by slaking water with natural
quicklime. It is the product central in all conservation materials,
it is a breatheable material. |

| What
is Lime Plaster ? |
Lime
Plaster is Plaster made from Lime Putty and Sand, as opposed to
modern plasters which contain cement or gypsum. It is a breathable
material and comes in a range of mixes dependant on application.
Base
coat plaster is usually the same as Mortar Mix, which is 3 parts
aggregates & 1 part putty.
Finish
Coat is a 1:1 or 2:1 mix with putty as the 1 part and a fine sand
as the 1 or 2 part of the mix. 1:1 produces a very smooth finish.
2:1 produces a more grainy finish.

| What
is Slaking? |
Slaking
is the name of the process involved in making lime putty. It is the
addition of water to quicklime in the correct ratios, producing lots
of heat as a by-product and producing the putty itself. |

| What
is a Chemical Set ? |
A
Chemical set is the method by which a product "goes off"
or "sets". Using a chemical process as opposed to a natural
drying out kind of set.
Modern
Plasters, Cement, and other fixing adhesives all have a chemical
set, this enables products to harden more quickly or in wet or submerged
conditions.
Lime
products do not have this type of set until porazzic elements or
admixes are included.

| What
is Quicklime ? |
Quick
lime has many guises, it can be chalk or limestone based, sometimes
with a host of other ingredients. It is made by burning chalk or
limestone, this removes the carbon dioxide and creates the volatile
quicklime.
